Watch the sun sink into the sea, and turn everything gold, as you sip a cocktail and chill. The popularity of the Café del Mar means that it gets very busy, and is possibly the most famous club on the island. Born to put music to sunsets, the Café has certainly lived up to the dream of its creators. With a track list that fuses image with sound perfectly, it is the place to see and be seen in the evening.
With a name like Café del Mar it's easy to guess that this hedonistic spot is located right on the oceanfront. Created by Jose Les, Carlos Andrea, and Ramon Guira in 1980, it has been a big hit with revellers since its inception. Their aim was to create a special place where the soul took flight, on musical wings to the shining backdrop of the glowing orb of the sun, setting into the azure blue sea.
The Café del Mar is a modern day version of the son et lumiere extravaganzas of the French courts. This modern version employs the master touches of artists from around the world, such as Jean-Michel Jarre, Moby, Underworld, Thomas Newman, and Chicane to provide the tempo for the magical descent of the sun.
Today you can find a collection of no less than fifteen CD's with world-renowned artists music under the name Café del Mar. With a franchise now including clothing, cosmetics and cell phones as well as music, the concept is now spreading far and wide: In fact there is even a Café del Mar in Singapore.
With its own sound and recognised as the place to chill out, the Café is still the number one place to be thirty years on, and is immortalised as the daddy of chill out.
The totally unique style of the Café is down to the well-known Catalan architect Lluis Guell, who took his inspiration from the Mediterranean sea its self: A part of this visual aspect is always included in the art work for the Café's music compilations.
Let the rest of the world fade into the background, and relax in the Café del Mar. You'll find good friends, good music, and a great place to be: It's got a real community vibe that people come back for again and again. They've got it so right that people will travel half way round the world to watch the sun go down right there. Anyone who's anyone has been there, and it's the absolute best place to see and be seen on the island. There may be many contenders for the chill out crown, but no one does it like the Café del Mar.
The feel good factor is just part of the experience you can't miss. No one should leave Ibiza without having experienced the Café del Mar at least once!
